Navigating the World of Digital Imagery

Confused by file types and sizes, resolution, compression, the difference in photos for the web, emailing and printing?

This workshop is designed to answer your questions about digital images, cameras, files, file formats, kilobytes, pixels, bits, acronyms (RGB, JPG, GIF…), and general gibberish that can be overwhelming.

Topics include:

- The structure of a digital image (what are pixels?)

- Resolution, colour, information – how numbers make pictures

- Digital capture devices (focusing mainly on cameras)

- File formats, files sizes and compression

- Output: web, email, print, lab

- Saving and storing images

- Sharing your images with the world

Mobile Phone Treasure Hunt

A fantastic challenge awaits…..Your task is to create a treasure hunt around Shantytown…. but this is no simple challenge. Learn how to write the clues as computer messages that will be transmitted via Bluetooth wireless signals to a mobile phone. Once you have made your treasure hunt you will attempt someone else’s course to find their treasure.

GPS Art

Science, art, technology, and good old fashioned run-around-fun combine to make a great full-day workshop. Learn about GPS technology – what it is and how it works – and then put it to use creating artwork on a big scale, which can be shared via the internet. We’ll look at what has been done before, and design our own creations.

 Lewis is the editor and primary writer of the Make it Digital guides provided by DigitalNZ as part of the National Library’s role for digital content creation. He has a particular personal interest in and extensive knowledge of using the internet and digital tools for genealogy and family history work.  Along with digitizing and restoring family photos, Lewis is currently researching his maternal grandfather’s family who settled in the North Otago area.

Lewis will cover a wide variety of topics from choosing what to make digital, using the right techniques to digitize photos and documents, keeping original and digital material safe.  He will also provide examples of internet research strategies that he has used in his own research, and cover how to make best use of what is available on the web. “Mobile technology as a business tool”

As technology becomes more complex, a gap is growing between the technology we purchase and the functions we actually use. We are told we can do more with our mobile phones, but many of us lack the time or understanding to leverage the benefits this new technology promises us. The user’s manuals are sometimes not much help either. What if you could respond to emails from your mobile while waiting for a flight, or use the GPS to search for a business address, or transfer music/photos to and from your computer?

After mentoring New Zealand’s business elite on how to maximise their mobile technology, West Coaster Kim Ellery returns home to help show you how to be more productive, more efficient, and above all else, confident in using your mobile. You don’t need to be savvy or own a flash new phone, you may just be wanting to know how you can reach your customers through text messaging, or what these ‘netbooks’ and ‘iPads’ everyone is talking about are.

By sharing insights gained from working alongside Vodafone, Telecom, IBM and others both here in NZ and the UK, Kim will demonstrate some of the latest mobile technology, explain how this applies to you and your business, and show you how you minimise your mobile costs. Kim has a good understanding of the West Coast business community, and these sessions will provide practical advice, and offer hands-on setup and support of your mobile technology. This is a great chance to learn of the latest technology trends and gain an understanding of how you can do more with your mobile.

Kim has been invited by the West Coast ICT Uptake project to prepare this presentation. It will be presented independently. He is not doing this to try and sell any company’s products or brands. The goal is for him to show us what some of the more popular applications are, how they work and how we could be using them. He will also cover some emerging trends in this area of technology.

About Kim Ellery: Kim Ellery is a born and bred West Coaster. He has a Bachelor of Commerce in Information Technology and Marketing from the University of Otago.Kim has worked as a technology trainer for Mobile Mentor Ltd having mentored New Zealand’s business elite, celebrities, and sporting organisations on their smartphones; consulting to Vodafone and Telecom. He was a mobile specialist at Air New Zealand’s launch of mPass application (mobile boarding pass) nationwide. Amongst other projects Kim has developed and launched two successful mobile applications to BlackBerry App World.
