West Coast Kete Project
Westland District Library
Kete West Coast Workshop
Tues 27th July 2010
5:30-7:30 pm
We would like to extend an invitation to you to attend a workshop we are organising to promote the use of the West Coast Kete website for the uploading and publishing of family and community photos and stories.
The West Coast Kete is a website managed by the National Library in conjunction with our three West Coast libraries. It is a focal point for West Coast content, including individual and family stories past and present. Content can be uploaded by anyone easily and freely from home or anywhere where access to the internet is available. What is special and important about this site is that, not only will it become a resource for people interested in the West Coast, the material uploaded becomes an archive for all future generations of West Coasters and it is stored in the National Library’s digital archive permanently.
Our aim is to capture West Coast stories, photographs and all sorts of relevant documents local people of all ages would like to upload to the site. We are aware there are lots of photos and slides in family collections or boxes tucked away in cupboards. There are also people writing books and family histories and lots of shorter stories that need to be captured before they are lost. There are also school projects about the region that could also be uploaded.
This workshop is being held on:
Tuesday 27th July from 5:30 – 7:30pm
at the Westland District Library.
Nibbles will be provided at 5pm
Topics being covered will include how to:
- digitise photographs, stories and documents
- upload them to the free West Coast Kete website
- use the free library scanner
- scan slides
- convert audio tapes to digital format
- create digital stories
RSVP Please
We would appreciate if you could please RSVP as soon as possible to register either with myself or Sarah as we do have a limit on numbers. Please also contact us if you requite any further information.
What to Bring
Please bring along your photos and documents to digitise. Please also bring along any photos you would like to put up that are already in digital format on a disc or memory stick. If you have any stories you would like uploaded or any captions for photos for the site please also bring these along. If you would like to take your digital photos home please also bring a memory stick or CD.
We have computers available however you are most welcome to bring a wireless laptop, if you have one, and work on you own system during the session. This will be able to connect to the free wireless internet at the library.
What We Need To Know
To help us plan and cater for numbers, we would appreciate if you could let us know when you register if you are bringing:
- you own wireless laptop
- slides you would like to convert to files (we will have three slide scanners available and we may organise a separate tutor to assist with this if several people want to do this)
- audio tapes to learn how to convert to digital format.
These sessions have been very popular in Greymouth and we have had to run additional workshops. It would be great to start digitising and capturing more Westland stories and information on the site.
We hope you will be able to join us for what should be an enjoyable evening.
Kind Regards
Jackie Gurden

Digitising Local Stories, Information, Photos and more
Expressions of Interest
Many people on the West Coast are researching their family histories, topics of interest or aspects of their communities. What if these stories, photos, public speeches, performances and class projects could be digitised and put online into a special West Coast part of the internet?
Following the very successful Kete Horowhenua project (see www.horowhenua.kete.net.nz) the National Library will shortly be launching a national kete project where this can happen. The West Coast libraries, in partnership with the West Coast ICT Uptake Project, would like to make this opportunity available on the West Coast and develop our own section on the National Library Kete site.
While in the initial stages of planning at present, this project would involve running workshops and providing the resources to assist individuals and groups who would like to participate, digitising their material and establishing an on-line West Coast Kete (or basket) for these to go into.
This could involve:
- Learning how to and recording stories in a digital format
- Turning oral histories into podcasts i.e. able to be listened to from the internet
- Turning photographs, museum objects, art and craft objects into digital images and putting them on the net.
- Taping speeches and events and having them webcast i.e. able to be viewed on the internet.
- Putting school projects about communities on the internet.
The First Step
Before proceeding any further the first thing we would like to establish is, who in our communities is working on these types of projects and would be interested in being involved.
If you are undertaking a project and are interested in knowing more about this with a view to being involved please contact us as soon as possible.
If you know someone else who is doing this we would appreciate if you could pass this information on and have them contact us.
If there is interest in being involved in this project we will look to making this happen by helping provide assistance to show you how to digitize your information and establishing a Tai Poutini Kete.
Contact Us
If you would like to register your interest in being involved in this please contact Michaela Bodesheim, michaela@bdc.govt.nz ph (03)788 8147 at the Westport Library or Jackie Gurden, jgurden@xtra.co.nz, (03) 768 5444 in Greymouth by the 31 October 2008.
